nap quilt no. 029

EXHIBITION NEWS: This quilt was on view throughout June, 2021 at the Albert Merola Gallery in Provincetown at 424 Commercial Street. It was part of the exhibit “IN AND OUT AND ROUND AND ROUND”. It is still possible to see the show online at albertmerolagallery.com

dimensions: roughly 58x74in / 147x188 cm (this quilt is not perfectly rectangular)

After cutting up old button down shirts for parts I continue to save the last bits - the shirt tail hems among them. Now this quilt is composed of those hems, interwoven and hand stitched to a linen ground. The inspiration for ‘weaving’ came after several hours studying the work of Anni Albers. Further along, some of the color choices evolved to include references to the garment colors of the women of the 2021 Inauguration.

This quilt is backed with warm white cotton. The quilt stitching around the woven strips is done in black thread which on the reverse side expresses itself as an understated graphic replay of the overall design, yet offers a contrasting sense of calm in relation to the animated front side.

It is bound with the same linen fabric and you may note a few intentional curves along the edges making room for some of the longer woven loops.

The label is hand stitched with the nap logo and its assigned number. This nap quilt no. 029 is the only one of its kind. Designed, pieced, and stitched in Provincetown.

care note: I recommend hand wash only for this quilt.
